Lighting Advice

When choosing lights for your home the first question we usually ask is how high are your ceilings? The height of your ceilings and the age of your house will help us determine which lights are the most suitable for you to use.

Most of our lights are made from solid brass. Many can be dulled down into an aged or old brass finish. They can also be plated over to become bronze (gloss), bronze (dull), chrome or nickel.

Advise us of the finish that you are after and we will advise you of which lights can be done in that finish.

All simple rod units, single chain units, single cord units, 3 chain units, 3 chain with rod units and some pendants can be done in the above finishes.

As a guide:

Victorian (1840-1890)

12ft plus ceilings - fittings were normally ornate and in a brass finish with pendant arms and etched glass. If using bowl fittings choose bowls with a floral pattern and rod/chain units.

Federation (1890-1915)

11ft plus ceilings - fittings were still in brass but not as ornate as the Victorian era. Not so much of the pretend gas tap look. Shades were not as pretty. Much more of an Australiana influence on ceiling roses and leadlight.

Edwardian (1901-1910)

11ft plus ceilings - Typically more formal and English in appearance than a Federation House.

Arts & Crafts (1910-1920)

10ft plus ceilings - Simple pendants also suited to the range of orginal lights that we sell.

Californian Bungalow (1916-1930)

10ft ceilings - Depending on the suburb some Bungalows have a heavy Art-Deco finish and some Art-Nouveau. Bring in or email us pictures of your ceiling roses and cornice. Choose from reproduction bowls on 3 chain units or the original bowls that we sell.

Old English (1930-1940)

9ft plus ceilings - simple clinker brick, some more ornate versions may have mock tudor styling.

Post War (1950-1970)

As long as your ceilings are 9ft or higher we can help you with lights. If they are shorter than this many of our lights shown on 3 chain units, cord units or rods can be fitted flush to the ceiling.
